About Sms

The SMS was formed in December 19th, 1987 from the initiative of some professors interested in the fostering of mathematics in Senegal.  The first President was Pr. Ahmet Seydi from 1987-1998. Then Pr. Mary Teuw Niane became president from 1998 to 2001. In  2001 Pr. Mamadou Sanghare was elected as the president of the Society, a position he occupies until today. In the General Assembly held in 2008, mathematicians from all Senegalese universities became members. Originally, the main goal of the SMS was the improvement of the quality of education in mathematics at all levels countrywide and to provide an environment where Senegalese mathematicians can exchange ideas and devise concrete actions aiming at the enhancement of the general background conditions for both research and education in mathematics in Senegal. Now it has 93 members and will be opened to high school teachers in mathematics.

Over the last 5 years several international workshops, schools and conferences in mathematical sciences were organized in the country. Most of them were sponsored by national and international organisms such as:  the German Exchange Service (DAAD), The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH), International Center for Pure and Applied Mathematics (ICPAM-CIMPA), International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Simons Foundation, Word Bank,  Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF), International Mathematical Union (IMU), The Senegalese Ministry of High Education Research, International Science Program (ISP), Fondation Sonatel, Institut de Recherche pour le Developpement-Unité de Modélisation Mathématique et Informatique des Systèmes Complexes (IRD-UMMISCO), International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Simons Foundations,  etc.

Research in pure and applied mathematics in Senegal has increased significantly during the recent years and the Senegalese researchers published papers in leading journals with high impact factors such as: SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization, Journal of Mathematical Fluid Mechanics,  Communications in Algebra, Nonlinearity, Journal of Functional Analysis, Annales de l'Institut Henri Poincaré,   Journal of Mathematical Physics, SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics,   Discrete and Continuous Dynamical Systems. Series A, Journal of Applied Probability, Mathematische Nachrichten, Advances in Geometry, Nonlinear Analysis. Real World Applications, Calculus of Variations and PDEs, etc.
